Screening of Derek Jarman’s BLUE at the Strand

CMCA’s three-part film series at Rockland’s Strand Theatre in conjunction with Because the Sky is Blue opens Sunday, October 25, at 5 pm, with Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993). Released the year before writer and director’s death from AIDS-related illness, Blue is a deeply personal and formally daring work that explores memory, love, mortality, and the expressive possibilities of color.

The screening will be introduced by and followed by a Q&A with Dr. Tom Sapsford, Associate Professor in Classical Studies at Boston College. Sapsford’s research focuses on performance, gender, and sexuality in both the ancient Greek and Roman worlds as well as their later receptions. His current book project, Classics & the Gay Counterculture, explores how several artists and activists from the gay underground, including Derek Jarman, adapted Greco-Roman materials in arresting and subversive ways. Prior to academia Tom worked as a dancer and choreographer in the UK with the Royal Ballet, the Michael Clark Company, Sarah Lucas, and Alexander McQueen amongst others.

Admission: $12 adults | $9 seniors (65+) and students
