Materials Swap
Join us to explore strategies for sourcing and working with reclaimed materials through the practice of interdisciplinary artist Merrilee Schoen, who will share examples from her body of work and speak to the roles of community and place in her methods. Bring with you any materials that you’re no longer using for a post-talk community materials exchange and go home with some new fodder for inspiration in hand.
Presenter Bio
Merrilee Schoen is an interdisciplinary assemblage artist constructing primarily with found objects, rust, and glass whose social praxis spans decades-long work in human rights advocacy and current frontline work in rural mutual aid projects including The Joy Truck, a mobile community resource center based in Brownville Junction, Maine. In 2024, Merrilee constructed an informal four month long artist residency in partnership with the city of Bangor and the Alloy Group at the site of demolition of "the Old YMCA," an historic downtown community space. Throughout these processes she bears witness to and constructs with sites and materials of change; inquiring into themes of labor, class, re-use, relation, and social structures of power.
The Artist Toolbox is made possible by major support from the Roxanne Quimby Foundation.
