From Seeds to Blooms
Join in for a hands-on, playful week full of exploring plant life (from real plants!) and on-site observations of trees and fauna. We will develop an understanding of stages of plant life in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional form. From the small seed to a full flower bloom, we will slow down our eyes and study the forms in nature that compose plants, trees, and even their critters that inhabit these delicate and bold spaces. The CMCA current summer exhibits will serve as inspiration, as we integrate our learnings to unfold thoughts, pleas, and concerns respecting and adoring the earth.
About the instructor
Hélène Farrar is a contemporary American artist, educator, and creative community builder based in Maine, best known for her work in encaustic painting, an ancient medium that uses heated beeswax mixed with pigment. Her artwork is immediately recognizable for its rich texture, luminous color, and layered surfaces, often inspired by the natural world, human experience, and a sense of place. She draws on themes like landscape, flowers, animals, and personal storytelling, using wax to build depth and subtle detail that invites viewers to slow down and look more closely. Her solo exhibition "What We Carry" at the Maine Jewish Museum explored emotional and social themes through encaustic work, reflecting on how people carry unseen experiences and stories. She has taught at major institutions such as the Farnsworth Art Museum, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and other arts organizations across the region. Whether working with beginners or experienced artists, she encourages people to explore texture, color, and personal expression, often using encaustic as both a painterly and sculptural material.
