TimeTravel: Making for the Future

Join our April Vacation ArtLabs with teaching artist Willoughby Lucas Hastings, held Monday–Thursday mornings during April vacation week. Participants will create handmade cardboard time capsules collaged with images inspired by participants' dreams for our future. Folks will also collaborate on drawing and writing prompts to add keepsakes to their containers. Participants are invited to think about the skill sets and responsibilities they aspire to and their impact on our future ecosystem. Attendance for all 4 days is recommended in order to complete the construction of the time capsule and its contents.

Preparations to make in advance:

  • Get inspired: Visit us in-person, located in downtown Rockland.

  • Dress for a mess: glue, paint, pieces galore!

Free and open to artists of all ages: youth ages 12+ may attend without adult supervision with limited spaces available, complete our registration form.

About the instructor

Willoughby Lucas Hastings is a visual artist and educator from Huntsville, Alabama, and based in Rockland, Maine. Willoughby works in textiles, photography, sculpture, and social practice. She is currently reading Practicing New Worlds Abolition and Emergent Strategies by Andrea J. Ritchie and creating a series of paintings and tapestries that envision an aspirational apocalyptic future, one that holds pleasure, offers collective care, inspires ingenuity, and sparks the return of magic. Willoughby works at Points North Institute and has taught studio art courses locally at Leaps of Imagination, Watershed School, and University of Southern Maine.

This program is presented in partnership with RSU13 Adult and Community Education through the generous support of the Anonimo Foundation.
