Join Because the Sky is Blue exhibiting artist Ryosuke Kumakura to learn how to make your own charcoal for drawing, starting with collecting sticks and transforming them through fire into a drawing material. We’ll explore the process together, from preparing and firing the wood to testing the finished charcoal on paper. This hands-on workshop offers participants a chance to slow down, experiment, and discover how a simple natural material can become a tool for drawing. Along the way, participants will develop a deeper appreciation for charcoal and the poetic process of making something by hand.
BYO garden or utility knife and garden shears. Some knives and shears provided by CMCA will be available for sharing. This workshop will take place outdoors by a fire with the option for light walking around the farm. For accessibility information, please contact rsmith@cmcanow.org.
*PLEASE NOTE: This event takes place at Tenderwild Farm (33 Gurney St, Rockport), has a slightly longer run time ending at 1PM, can accommodate 15 participants and is cash only admission.
About the Artist
Born and raised in Niigata, Japan (now based in Maine) Ryosuke Kumakura’s conceptual painting practice examines the ways we organize our surroundings and lives. Each intimate work is an observational meditation on the essence within everyday objects and the patina of daily life. Through his acute attention to an object’s textural, tactile quality, Kumakura teases and blurs the boundaries between object and canvas as well as painting and viewer. Each work he creates is rendered with a tender precision capturing the stains on the t-shirt of a past lover, the hole in the sole of a worn sock, or the frayed edge on a bathroom towel. These imperfections gesture towards the true spirit of a thing, not only holding the existence of those who have used and loved the objects, but also giving the painting an essence in and of itself.
